"Wassail Feast" Charger by Pewabic for Detroit Institute of Arts, 1982
About the Item
Crafted by one of America's finest Arts and Crafts potteries long after the era was over, this charger, glazed in a lovely, deep forest green, was made by Pewabic Pottery in Detroit for an annual holiday event hosted by the Detroit Institute of Arts. The Wassail Feast, begun in 1973, attracted as many as 2,000 guests at its high point, and to mark the event in 1982, Pewabic was commissioned to make this charger finished in a Classic Arts and Crafts manner with a deep, spotted green glaze. Dating back to 1903 and founded by Mary Chase Perry, Pewabic became one of the nation's leading potteries and continued after her death under the aegis of Michigan State University. Shortly before this charger was made, the pottery was taken over by the Pewabic Society, which aimed to revitalize its design and production, and begin an education program.
