18th Century Chinese Qianlong Porcelain Dish

This petite Chinese dish is exquisitely hand-painted in Famille Verte colors of green, blue and red. Dating from circa 1740 it is decorated with floral scenes. The center features a landscape with a pheasant perched on top of a Taihu rock. The central roundel is framed by two registers of floral and lotus pond scenes which seem to swirl around the plate, creating a lifelike scene. The artist paid close attention to detail: even the border has beautiful decoration of scrolling vines, foliage, and flowers. The scalloped edge of the plate is in gold. Dimensions: 6.5 inches diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $1,200 Background Produced in the 18th century, Chinese export porcelain was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as Chinese Imperial porcelain but designed to Western taste. Its continued popularity tells the story of the interaction of Chinese artisans and Western importers who, even without a common language were able to bring these wonderful porcelains to Americans and Europeans.
