About the Item
Outstanding and very refined and exquisite porcelain bowl from the celebrated Fairyland Lustre series, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones, one of the most visionary designers of 20th-century English ceramics, for the Wedgwood factory. Marked on the base.
The piece features intricate fantasy scenes, often described with motifs such as "Leaping Faun" or dreamlike landscapes with fairies and mythical creatures. Daisy Makeig-Jones joined Wedgwood in early 1909 and revolutionized traditional decorative language with fantastical scenes populated by fairies, magical creatures, starry skies, and ethereal landscapes. Her boundless imagination and extraordinary command of color transformed her works into true icons of international decorative art.
This series became one of the English firm's most captivating and sophisticated productions. Combining iridescent reflections, metallic glazes, and narrative worlds inspired by fairy tales, symbolism, and fantasy, these pieces achieved a visual language that was entirely innovative for its time. Susannah Margaretta "Daisy" Makeig-Jones was a pottery designer for Wedgwood. She is best known for her "Fairyland Lustre" series. Makeig-Jones was born in Wath-upon-Dearne near Rotherham, Yorkshire, the eldest of seven children. Her father, K. Geoffrey Makeig-Jones, was of Welsh descent and was a medical doctor and her mother was the daughter of Thomas Reeder, a solicitor. Makeig-Jones was taught by a governess at home, then attended a boarding school near Rugby. After her family moved to Torquay, she entered the Torquay School of Art. After an introduction from a relative to the managing director of Cecil Wedgwood, Makeig-Jones joined the firm as an apprentice painter in 1909.
