Beautiful Base Lamp - Vase Porcelain De Paris Hand Painted French Cancan

About the Item

Very beautiful and original vase, transformed in a base lamp in a porcelain de Paris decorated and painted by hand with a pattern of dancers cancan in pastel colors. There is no electrical installation but there is a hole at the base to do the necessary (see the last picture). Bought at an auction "Parisian interiors of the XXth century". This vase has surely been transformed by its former owner. no chips, no tears, no cracks. The Porcelain of Paris, more commonly called "Old Paris" by the antique dealers, is a porcelain with hard paste, of a pure white, milky, very brilliant. Their production always aims to imitate the works of Sèvres, of which they strove to appropriate the processes and attract the workers. It was forbidden for them to use the gold and the colored funds reserved for the king's sole manufacture, but these ordinances were not always respected and, in 1784 and 1787, new judgments were issued granting them complete freedom. The Paris porcelain was perpetuated in the 19th century. in the establishments run by Dagoty and Honore, Darte, Dihl, and Guerhard, Jacob Petit, Nast, Schoelcher, etc.. The French cancan The history of the French cancan begins in the 1820s. At that time, the quadrille is the dance in vogue in the public balls of the capital. But, as popular as it is, this group dance has a major flaw: there is no room for improvisation. Indeed, the choreography is systematically in pairs and the figures are executed in a quasi-canonical order. Tired of not being able to afford some daring in groups, men decide to give themselves a few minutes of extravagance solo. These minutes of "heckling" based on disordered figures and anarchic movements quickly become cathartic sessions for men who indulge in this pleasure menu. The reactions are mixed and some middle class cry to debauchery. But when, a few years later, daring young Parisians dare, too, to try this sequence, the reactions are much more virulent. The authorities immediately ban the practice of this dance deemed indecent and scandalous. A prohibition that does not prevent the most intrepid to launch with provocation in the adventure, far from it! Queen Pomare, Brididi, Chicard, then Celeste Mogador will brave the law and become the first darling of the public balls of the capital. In the popular vocabulary, the "heckling" is gradually transformed into "chahut-cancan", then "cancan", by analogy with the waddling of the duck. All Paris gets into the cancan, which becomes "French" From now on, we dance the cancan at Bal Mabille Faubourg Saint-Honoré, then Montparnasse at Bal Bullier and Closerie des Lilas. In the 1880s, the first cabarets open at the foot of the Montmartre hill and give this "dance of debauchery" a place to flourish. The mythical Moulin Rouge unfolds, just like the Moulin de la Galette and the Folies-Bergère. These establishments put the woman at the heart of their shows and give their place to the stars of the cancan. Some dancers, like La Goulue, are immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec. The notoriety of this dance quickly exceeds our borders and the English renamed it "French Cancan".
