Meissen Group 'Allegory Of The Volga' for Catherine II of Russia, Kaendler, 1850
Located in Vienna, AT
Very rare and excellent porcelain sculpture: Kändler created this group in 1772, right at the beginning of the work on the large order, as a personification of one of the two great main rivers of the vast Russian Empire, the natural waterways Volga and Dnieper, important for economy and traffic, which promised prosperity and wealth to the Empire: The Volga in the form of a river god, seated sideways on heavily relieved fully sculptured rock covered with shells and coins as well as fern and reed plants, fully bearded and crowned with laurel, wrapped in floral patterned purple loincloth. He looks pensively to the side and rests his right arm on an overturned baluster vase, from which water flows together with shells and fish, on the wall of the vase the crowned, rocaille-framed Polish-Lithuanian royal coat of arms with the coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony. At the same time he touches with his hand an oar with gold ornamentation and crossed red swords, in his left he holds a cornucopia with plastic flowers, ears of grain and coins, symbols of fertility and wealth. The group is based on the front curved plinth with relief gold heightened meander and ribbon border. The design of this group belongs to the models of the 'Great Russian Order...

Meissen Porcelain Huge Ewer Jug Air by Kaendler Model 327 Made 19th Century
Located in Vienna, AT
Meissen gorgeous as well as huge ewer: It derives from a series of Four Elements - this ewer symbolizes AIR. Dating: made 19th century (circa 1870). Material: White porcelain, glossy finish, finest painting. Technique: Handmade porcelain. Designer:   Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) / he was chief sculptor at Meissen manufactory as from 1742 until the year 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer) , Gallant Figurines, etc. Kaendler designed this ewer (Model 327) circa 1750. Subject: Huge ewer "AIR" from the Elements series (= Air, Water, Earth, Fire). The massive pitcher having large spout is abundantly decorated with sculputured figurines: - there are a lovely cherub as well as two boyish Elves flying from top area / two of them wear music instruments being strongly connected with Air: these are bagpipes and a special type of flute. - the crowned seated figure of Juno or Hera seizing a sceptre is visible at front side or she is accompanied by her attribute, the peacock which symbolizes Love and Beauty. - Zephyr, God of Wind, blows air with all his efforts: It is a nice unclad youth having wings here. - Finally, a winged flying cherub holding a bird is attached to area below. A very particular feature is the fact that the handle of this pitcher is shaped as blue drapery / the spout as well as base are decorated with multicolored feathers. Additionally, various flocks of birds including cranes, storks and pheasants as well as clouds cover the pitcher's surface - all modelled in raised relief. Some multicolored paintings of insects - laid on white porcelain - decorate ewer's upper area. Gorgeous appearance as well as excellent Meissen quality, delicate finest painting, superb modelling. Size: height: 63.5 cm (= 24.99 inches) width: 40.0 cm (= 16.0 inches) Marks: THIS MEISSEN EWER...

Antique and Vintage Porcelain Dinner Plates, Platters and Serveware for Sale

Today you’re likely to bring out your antique and vintage porcelain in order to dress up your dining table for a special meal.

Porcelain, a durable and nonporous kind of pottery made from clay and stone, was first made in China and spread across the world owing to the trade routes to the Far East established by Dutch and Portuguese merchants. Given its origin, English speakers called porcelain “fine china,” an expression you still might hear today. "Fine" indeed — for over a thousand years, it has been a highly sought-after material.

Meissen Porcelain, one of the first factories to create real porcelain outside Asia, popularized figurine centerpieces during the 18th century in Germany, while works by Capodimonte, a porcelain factory in Italy, are synonymous with flowers and notoriously hard to come by. Modern porcelain houses such as Maison Fragile of Limoges, France — long a hub of private porcelain manufacturing — keep the city’s long tradition alive while collaborating with venturesome contemporary artists such as illustrator Jean-Michel Tixier.

Porcelain is not totally clumsy-guest-proof, but it is surprisingly durable and easy to clean. Its low permeability and hardness have rendered porcelain wares a staple in kitchens and dining rooms as well as a common material for bathroom sinks and dental veneers. While it is tempting to store your porcelain behind closed glass cabinet doors and reserve it only for display, your porcelain dinner plates and serving platters can safely weather the “dangers” of the dining room and be used during meals.

Add different textures and colors to your table with dinner plates and pitchers of ceramic and silver or a porcelain lidded tureen, a serving dish with side handles that is often used for soups. Although porcelain and ceramic are both made in a kiln, porcelain is made with more refined clay and is stronger than ceramic because it is denser.

On 1stDibs, browse an expansive collection of antique and vintage porcelain made in a variety of styles, including Regency, Scandinavian modern and other examples produced during the mid-century era, plus Rococo, which found its inspiration in nature and saw potters crafting animal figurines and integrating organic motifs such as floral patterns in their work.
