MEISSEN STUNNING FIGURINE GROUP: A COUPLE OF SHEPHERDS WATCHED BY A SCOUT MEASURES: height: 9.25 inches width: 7.28 inches depth: 6.88 inches Manufactory: Meissen Hallmarked: Blue Meissen Sword Mark (glazed bottom) model number 2870 / painter's number 62 / former's number 120 FIRST QUALITY Dating: 19th century / made circa 1850 Material: porcelain, glossy finish, multicolored painted Technique: handmade porcelain Style: Rococo MODELLED BY: JOHANN JOACHIM KAENDLER (born in 1706 near Dresden / Germany - died 1775 in Meissen). - MODEL 2870 CREATED CIRCA 1762. Kaendler was chief sculptor at Meissen manufactory as from 1742 until the year 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created well-known series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer), Gallant Figurines, Asian Figurines etc. Additionally, Kaendler made, too, excellent models of animal figurines as well as of stunningly decorated vases. DETAILED DESCRIPTION: Pair of Loving Couple as shepherd and shepherdess, being observed by a scout who has hidden himself behind a romantic ruin / the man is keeping an eye on the loving couple who is dressed in elegant Rococo garments: The man wearing a wig is clad in a mantle, knee breeches and stockings as well as in jacket and shirt / the woman wears a girdled dress with overskirt. The man is going to garland his beloved companion with wreath of flowers' blossoms ... additionally, two sheep are lying next to couple's feet / behind the man there is a dog visible. - The figurine group is attached to base with Rocaille ornaments. The figurines group is attached to round rocky base. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Rainer Rückert, Meissener Porzellan 1710 - 1810 (Munich 1966), catalogue number 1023 on page 186, picture on plate 250: A smaller variant (without the scout's figurine) - but with same model number - is shown there.
