About the Item

Chelsea Porcelain Tromp L'oeil Leaf Dish, Red Anchor Period, circa 1755-1760 The large Red Anchor period Chelsea Porcelain tromp l'oeil leaf dish is naturally colored and modelled as an open cabbage leaf with a curved stem issuing puce moulded veins, the leaves are edged in green shading to light yellow while in the center of the dish is a sprig of a pink rose and other flowers. Dimensions: 10 1/4 inches wide x 7 1/2 inches deep x 2 inches high Reference: Chelsea Porcelain at Williamsburg, John Austin, Pages 96-97, #87 for illustration of a similar pair but without the flower painting. The author mentions that this shape of leaf dish was used both as an underdish for tromp l'oeil tureens such as rabbit, cauliflower, melon and rose forms and also as part of dessert services. He quotes a description from the Chelsea Porcelain sale on the sixth day, lot 42, in 1755 described as "scollop'd compotiers green leaves."
