18th-century Wedgwood Creamware Soup Plate with German Ship Decoration.

About the Item

"The Enigmatic Standard": Wedgwood Creamware Soup Plate with Ship & Eagle, 1775-90 A handsome Wedgwood Queen's Ware (creamware) soup plate modeled in the "Royal" shape, dating to the late 18th century (circa 1775–1790). The plate is decorated with a crisp black transfer print featuring a large naval vessel sailing upon a turbulent sea. The ship flies a prominent yellow flag charged with a double-headed eagle, a symbol of imperial dominion. This central scene is personalized with the initials "LCBCC" beneath the vessel and "FMDCB" on the rim. The "Royal" shape rim is further embellished with five delicate sprays of flowers, providing a light, floral contrast to the dramatic maritime subject. Markings: Maker's Mark: Impressed Wedgwood mark. Decorator: Attributed to Guy Green of Liverpool (known for high-quality transfer printing on Wedgwood blanks). Measurements: Diameter: 9 1/2 inches (24 cm) Historical Context: This plate presents a fascinating historical puzzle regarding the "Enigmatic Standard." While the double-headed eagle suggests an imperial connection—potentially to Francis II (Holy Roman Emperor) or the Russian Empire (for the Baltic trade)—the specific client remains a subject of debate. Wedgwood expert Robin Reilly suggests the service was manufactured for the Russian market. Regardless of the exact attribution, the personalized initials confirm this was part of an exclusive, custom-ordered service for a wealthy merchant or official involved in Northern European commerce. The piece exemplifies the technical prowess of the Wedgwood-Liverpool partnership. Josiah Wedgwood's refined creamware body, combined with Guy Green's efficient transfer printing, allowed for the rapid production of sophisticated, customized luxury goods that dominated the global market in the late Georgian era.
