1978 Peter Shire Earthenware Post Modern Memphis Group Teapot

About the Item

Early post modern earthenware teapot created by Los Angeles designer and artist of the Memphis Group, Peter Shire, circa 1978. Teapot measures 10.5" in height by 15" wide by 5.75" and is signed Shire, EXP, 1978. In very good vintage 1970s condition. New owner will receive a copy of the original sales receipt from the Janus Gallery, dated 1979. My last photo of Mr. Shire, seated in his iconic Bel-Air chair, was taken by Mat Hayward. The following was taken and abbreviated from the artists bio on Artnet: Peter Shire American is an American ceramic artist and designer known for his unique, pastel colored mugs, teapots, and furniture. “What I strive for in my work—and this is an ongoing thing, and that is the key element of making a pot is, a volume,” he has explained. Born in 1947 in Los Angeles, CA, he studied ceramics at the Chouinard Institute before starting his own studio in 1972. He continues to live and work in Los Angeles, California. Today, Shire’s works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
