Langiu Vase, a Revisitation of the Sardinian Water Jug by Sam Baron

Estimated Production Time3-4 weeks

About

Following on a series of vases made with Mexican artisans, Sam Baron continues his exploration into what makes an object belong to a certain territory. Langiu (tall) Vase and Cruciu (short) Vase are two versions of the humble terracotta water jug found throughout the world, throughout time. With only simple suggestion on form and construction, Baron asks artisans from various parts of the world to create these jugs in their own style. They are then painted halfway to celebrate the contrast between the simple terracotta shape and the elaborate handles. The differences between the resulting jugs is a dual signifier: that we all are born of the same ancestry, that our unique cultures make us richer. The vase is crafted by artisan Walter Usai, a fifth generation potter. The Usai family's inter-generational story is only one of many in the small town of Assemini, known as one of the poles of Sardinian ceramic production. Walter's particular style is rooted in the inimitable texture that comes from his shaping of details and decorations. A master of form, he is able to create vases that are at once timeless and deeply rooted in Sardinian history. As all of our collection is handmade by artisans, small inconsistencies may result in the finished product. These personal touches are what distinguish our objects from their Industrial counterparts.

Colors: White or Gray *Please note that the gray glaze is made from a mixture of leftover glazes in the workshop. Because of this, each glaze will have a unique undertone.

Pretziada

Pretziada

View Profile
Pretziada is an interdisciplinary project combining the worlds of journalism, design, craftsmanship and tourism. Our mission might seem contradictory - we want to bring the world to Sardinia in order to preserve all of the particularities of this Mediterranean island. But we truly believe that, working with full respect for the unique local heritage and traditions we can bring change, modernity and innovation to Sardinia without losing an ounce of authenticity. We live full-time on the island, traveling through small mountain towns and coastal villages, learning about the culture and meeting artisans. Ivano, born and raised in Milan, comes from the world of fashion and contemporary art. Kyre, a native Californian, spent years as a Set Designer in New York. In 2015, we moved to a small, rural corner of southwestern Sardinia to begin Pretziada. We've since been honored to win The Design Prize for Best Design Newcomers and to be included in the Beazley Designs of the Year show at the London Design Museum. Our small, curated collection is composed of a combination of classic Sardinian art-crafts as well as exclusive collaborations between Sardinian artisans and international creatives. Each item is backed up by months of research and confrontation, followed by true interaction among the artists, artisans, designers and us. The collection exudes sardità (the essence of Sardinia) with a contemporary, clean aesthetic.
