"Laurence, " Arts and Crafts Piece with Rabbit by Saturday Evening Girls/Revere

About the Item

Charming and beautifully crafted, this rare plate designed for a child -- and customized for "Laurence" by the Saturday Evening Girls (SEG) at the Paul Revere Pottery in Massachusetts -- is a lovely example of American Arts and Crafts ceramics. The artist -- Fannie Levine -- used a golden, butternut squash-hued glaze for the body of the plate, highlighted with blue and green for the central medallion. The pottery created by the SEG grew out of a library reading club for young immigrant women living in Boston’s North End established in 1899 by reformer Edith Guerrier. Pottery production started in 1907 and continued into the 1920s, with a stream of pieces with floral, animal or landscape themes glazed by young women. The impressed Paul Revere Pottery mark is evident on the bottom, along with Levine's initials.
