Staffordshire Pottery Cow Figure with Milkmaid

About the Item

Victorian Staffordshire Cow & Milkmaid Group, Circa 1860 A charming and narrative Victorian Staffordshire pottery figure group, dating from circa 1860. This model captures a classic moment of idealized rural life, often interpreted as a cow crossing a shallow stream or standing on a grassy bank. The large cow is painted with broad patches of iron-red enamel against a white body. Standing prominently at the animal's head is a milkmaid, her right arm gently resting across the cow's neck in a gesture of affection or guidance. The figure is distinguished by its vibrant, naive coloring: the milkmaid wears a pink skirt beneath a white apron and bodice detailed with green, while a milking pail rests on the ground behind her. The scene is mounted on a molded, slightly domed base finished in green and brown glazes to represent the terrain, with a yellow band anchoring the foot. Condition: Good antique condition. The colors remain distinct and vibrant. There is a small hairline crack visible on the back of the cow (noted in inspection). Measurements: Height: 7 inches (17.8 cm) Width: 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm) Depth: 3 inches (7.6 cm) Historical Context: In the mid-19th century, as Britain rapidly urbanized, the "Pastoral Idyll" became a potent symbol of nostalgia. Staffordshire potters produced thousands of these "chimney ornaments" for the working and middle classes, offering a romanticized vision of agricultural life that contrasted sharply with the reality of industrial cities. The motif of the milkmaid and cow was particularly beloved, representing health, domestic virtue, and the timeless abundance of the English countryside. (Ref: NY10558-xam)
