Round Chinese Market Basket, c. 1900

About the Item

This basket was made in Southern China over a century ago by a skilled artisan with many years of training. It was common to learn the skill from a father or older family member: the knowledge passing from generation to generation. This basket has a deceptively simple form, but the tightly woven reeds, bent wood handle and elegant shape demonstrate the craftsman’s mastery of his art.
