Pair of Green Sunflower Majolica Serving Dishes by Wedgwood

About the Item

Pair of green majolica glazed serving dishes in the ‘Sunflower’ pattern by Wedgwood, made 1872. The sunflower, alongside the calla lily and peacock feather, became an emblem of the late nineteenth-century Aesthetic Movement. Oscar Wilde became an emphatic advocate of the flower, writing that is was "a perfect model of design most naturally adapted for decorative art" ("The English Renaissance of Art," 1882). As the color green also became a favorite of the Aesthetes, the Wedgwood company capitalized on the trend with its green majolica sunflower design. First appearing around 1860, this pattern proved extremely popular and was produced well into the twentieth century. These dishes would have contributed to an artistic interior which functioned as a sanctuary for beauty in daily life. Dimensions: 8 in. W x 11 in. L x 1 in. H (20.3 cm W x 27.9 cm L x 2.5 cm H) Condition: Excellent. On one dish: small chips to underside of rim, the largest measuring 0.8 cm; very faint hairline on one handle. • Six Wedgwood Majolica Argenta 'Lincoln' Pattern Dessert Dishes
    By Wedgwood
    Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Six Wedgwood majolica Argenta palette ‘Lincoln' pattern dessert plates with finely molded maroon prunus blossoms and dark taupe pine branches surrounded by a yellow Greek key border. The dishes are decorated in the japonisme style and feature the “Three Friends of Winter” motif, an Asian artistic convention showing the pine, plum, and bamboo together to represent steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. The Wedgwood factory introduced muted Argenta glazes to its majolicas in the 1880s to keep up with ever-changing fashions. The Argenta glaze color palette was more subdued than that of traditionally vibrant majolica, and was thus more appealing to the Aesthetic Movement japonisme style that pervaded the market. These Argenta majolica dessert dishes...

  • Meissen Porcelain Dinner Service, 189 Pieces
    By Meissen Porcelain
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Comprising an incredible 189 pieces, this impressive Meissen porcelain dinner service is an exceptional example of the firm's prized dinnerware. The bodies are crafted in the New Brandenstein relief pattern designed by Johann Friedrich Eberlein in 1744, which gives this service a distinct Rococo feel. The hand-painted enamel detailing is known as the Flowers and Insects motif and is executed with stunning vibrancy and intricacy. Since each piece is executed entirely by hand, no two pieces bear the exact same adornments.

Similar, single dining pieces are featured in Meissen Domestic Porcelain by Günther Sterba, 1991, figures 83 through 86.

The pieces bear the Meissen blue crossed swords that date this service between 1850/60-1924.
