Antique Victorian Oval Silver Plated Tray Walker & Hall, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a momumental beautiful antique English Victorian neo-classical oval silver-plated twin handled tray by the renowned silversmith Walker & Hall, circa 1880 in date. This large oval silver plated tray has elegant engraved stylised c-scrolls and foliate and floral decoration. It has been masterfully engraved with ancient warriors, surrounded with a raised border, and centred with a heraldic crest, dated 1880. It has a decorative pair of handles with a beaded outer edge. It is splendid and luxurious and will look fabulous on your sideboard with decanters and glasses. The quality and craftsmanship throughout the piece are truly second to none. Condition: In excellent condition with clear makers marks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 4.5 x Width 72.5 x Depth 18 Dimensions in inches: Height 2 inches x Width 2 foot, 4 inches x Depth 7 inches Walker & Hall the business was established in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker who become an assistant of Dr John Wright. Dr John Wright had conducted important experiments on electroplating, Walker secured the royalty of electroplating for Sheffield. The business was joined by Henry Hall and became in 1853 Walker & Hall. The factory was at Howard Street, Sheffield, while showrooms were opened in 45 Holborn Viaduct, London. Branches were opened in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, Hull, Bristol, Melbourne and Adelaide (Australia), Cape Town (South Africa). Walker & Hall was converted into a limited liability company in 1920 under the style Walker & Hall Ltd and combined in 1963 under the British Silverware Ltd with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co. Walker and Hall Sheffield were primarily Sheffield Makers, but items with Birmingham, London and Chester Assay Marks can also be found.

    This is a wonderful antique silver plated Victorian salver bearing the makers mark of William Hutton & Sons, and dating from Circa 1860. It has beautiful engraved floral and foliate decoration in the Neo-classical style and is raised on elegant scrolled feet. After his death the business was continued under the same style by the founder's son William Carr Hutton until 1864, when the name was changed to William Hutton & Son. This was a partnership of William Carr Hutton and his youngest son Herbert Hutton (senior, born 1843).William Carr Hutton died in 1865 and c. 1870 Herbert Hutton Sr. was joined by his brothers James Edward Hutton (b. 1839) and Robert (b. 1840) and the name was changed to William Hutton & Sons.
