19th Century Austrian 900 Sterling Silver Jack End Knife Rests, S/4
About the Item
A set of four Austrian Sterling Silver knife rests, with traditional cast Jack-style ends, circa mid 19th Century.
The long, tapered center struts are supported by four point jacks at either end. Each strut shows an older monogram of PKR.
Rather than balance a knife on the edge of a plate, these rests were placed to the right of each place setting to keep the knife from soiling the table linen.

The oldest form of the chaplain is that of a small bag, with two cords (or loops) to close it, and another cord to open it and hang it from the belt by means of a stirrup. The caliper was closed by pulling on the two runners. The simple cord, attached at its ends to the upper edge of the bag, allowed it to be opened and passed through the metal stirrup.
