Founded in 1837 by master silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot, a visionary artisan with a passion for creating exceptional silver pieces; the firm's commitment to quality quickly attracted the attention of aristocrats, royalty, and the burgeoning bourgeoisie. For over a thousand years, this lineage of skilled artisans has crafted exquisite silverware that transcends mere utility, evolving into a symbol of luxury, artistry, and French cultural heritage. The story of the Lapparra family's silversmithing prowess begins in the early 10th century. By the 12th century, the Lapparra name had become synonymous with craftsmanship, and their workshops produced intricate chalices, candlesticks, and reliquaries for churches across France. The 19th century witnessed the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and the consolidation of his empire. The Lapparra silversmiths adapted to the imperial tastes, crafting magnificent pieces that showcased the grandeur of the First French Empire, like this amazing 328-piece flatware set. In addition, elaborate tea and coffee sets, dinnerware, and ornate presentation pieces were created for the imperial court, earning the family the coveted title of "Imperial Silversmiths." The Lapparra family's creations graced the tables of Napoleon's lavish banquets and adorned the Palais des Tuileries. Their innovative techniques, set new standards in silversmithing. Even after Napoleon's fall, the Lapparra legacy endured, as they continued to cater to the elite of Europe, from Russian tsars to British nobility. The Lapparra family's enduring legacy extends far beyond their magnificent silverware. Their contributions to the world of silversmithing have left an indelible mark on French culture and the global art community. Their ability to evolve with the times while preserving their commitment to quality and craftsmanship has made them a symbol of artistic excellence. The Lapparra name is not only associated with opulence and luxury but also with innovation and artistic expression. Their influence can be seen in the work of countless contemporary silversmiths who draw inspiration from their rich history. The Lapparra family's legacy continues into the 21st century, as the family's artisans continue to produce exquisite silverware, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. With a renewed focus on custom creations and limited-edition series, they cater to collectors, museums, and connoisseurs worldwide. Puiforcat (Hermes) - 169pc. French 950 Sterling Silver Flatware Set (Noailles)
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from Paris, A Superb 169pc. 19th Century 950 Sterling Silver Flatware Set with 19 Serving Pieces (Noailles Pattern) by the World's Premier French Silversmith "Puiforcat" Currently Owned by Hermes, circa early 1900s. The history of French silver-smithing is rich and diverse, with numerous artisans and firms that have contributed to its enduring legacy. Among these, Puiforcat stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry that has defined this industry for generations. Established in the early 19th century, Puiforcat has consistently represented the pinnacle of French silverwork. The Puiforcat legacy began in 1820, when Emile Puiforcat founded his eponymous silversmith workshop in Paris. Emile was inspired by the rich heritage of French craftsmanship and sought to revive the art of silver-smithing, which had faced decline during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution. Puiforcat was instrumental in reviving and elevating the art, offering not only functional silverware but also beautifully designed and meticulously crafted pieces that were celebrated for their aesthetic and utilitarian value. Puiforcat quickly established a reputation for artistic innovation. Emile Puiforcat's meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to excellence pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved with silver. He introduced innovative designs that blended classicism with modernity, which appealed to the evolving tastes of the 19th-century clientele. Puiforcat's quality and artistry soon attracted the attention of the French aristocracy. The company received royal commissions from the court of King Louis-Philippe, cementing its status as a premier silversmith. At the Exposition Universelle held in Paris in 1889, Puiforcat was awarded a gold medal for its outstanding silver creations. This recognition affirmed the company's place at the forefront of French silver-smithing. In 1993, the house of Puiforcat became a part of the Hermès Group, a move that further elevated its status in the world of luxury craftsmanship. Hermès, renowned for its commitment to artisanship and fine materials, was a natural fit for Puiforcat. Under the ownership of Hermès, Puiforcat has continued to thrive and innovate, maintaining its reputation as a premier silversmithing brand. In recognition of the exceptional collaboration between Puiforcat and Hermès, the brand received the Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris in 1994. This award celebrated the excellence in design and craftsmanship that the union of these two iconic brands had brought forth. This amazing 169pc. serving set in 950 sterling silver is a stunning example of the outstanding craftsmanship of the firm. The set includes the following (all weights and measures approximate: 6 Sterling Silver Dinner Knives...

Vintage, New and Antique Sterling Silver

Dining and entertaining changed drastically when we began to set our tables with sterling silver for holiday gatherings, wedding receptions, engagement parties and, in some of today’s homes, everyday meals.

Often called the “Queen of metals,” silver has been universally adored for thousands of years. It is easy to see why it has always been sought after: It is durable, strong and beautiful. (Louis XIV had tables made entirely of silver.) Sterling silver is an alloy that is made of 92.5 percent silver — the “925” stamp that identifies sterling-silver jewelry refers to this number. The other 7.5 percent in sterling silver is typically sourced from copper.

Neoclassical-style sterling-silver goods in Europe gained popularity in the late 18th century — a taste for sterling-silver tableware as well as tea sets had taken shape — while in the United States, beginning in the 19th century, preparing the dinner table with sterling-silver flatware had become somewhat of a standard practice. Indeed, owning lots of silver goods during the Victorian era was a big deal. Back then, displaying fine silver at home was a status symbol for middle-class American families. And this domestic silver craze meant great profitability for legendary silversmith manufacturers such as Reed & Barton, Gorham Manufacturing Company and the International Silver Company, which was incorporated in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1898, a major hub of silver manufacturing nicknamed “Silver City.”

Today, special occasions might call for ceremonial silver designed by Tiffany & Co. or the seductive sterling-silver cutlery from remarkable Danish silversmith Georg Jensen, but there really doesn’t have to be an event on the calendar to trot out your finest tableware.

Event- and wedding-planning company maestro Tara Guérard says that some “investment pieces,” such as this widely enamored alloy, should see everyday use, and we’re inclined to agree.

“Sterling-silver flatware is a must-have that you can use every single day, even to eat cereal,” she says. “Personally, I want a sterling-silver goblet set for 12 to 20; I would use them every time I had a dinner party. Ultimately, there are no criteria for buying vintage pieces: Buy what you love, and make it work.”
