Antique Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Griffin Vesta / Match Safe, circa 1900

About the Item

Exceptional antique Art Nouveau sterling silver vesta case or match safe featuring an ornate repoussé design with flowing organic scrollwork surrounding a central blank cartouche and striking heraldic griffin motif. The sculptural mythical beast, rendered in high relief, gives the piece a distinctive Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau character rarely found in small silver accessories of the period. #5301 Beautifully hand-finished with a softly contoured form, this pocket-sized match safe retains its original hinged lid and functional striker edge along the base. The richly developed patina accentuates the depth of the repoussé decoration and highlights the intricate craftsmanship throughout. Likely American or Continental European in origin, the design is highly reminiscent of luxury smoking accessories produced during the late Victorian and early Art Nouveau era by firms such as Unger Brothers, Kerr, Gorham, and other prominent silversmiths working in the circa 1890–1910 period. Interior markings appear faint and partially worn with age. An outstanding addition to a collection of antique sterling silver, smoking accessories, mythological motifs, or Art Nouveau decorative arts. Displays beautifully on a desk, vanity, or within a curated silver collection. Circa: 1895–1910 Origin: Likely American or European Style: Art Nouveau / Gothic Revival Materials: Sterling silver Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, surface scratches, oxidation, and patina consistent with use and age. Hinge functions properly. Interior hallmark partially worn and difficult to fully decipher.
