$2,103.41

About

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George III English sterling silver pint mug with cockfighting interest; an addition to our Georgian silverware collection. This exceptional antique George III sterling silver pint mug has a plain baluster form onto a circular domed spreading foot. The surface of this antique mug is plain and embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved initials 'IE' above an illustration depicting a cockerel; the spurs to the cockerels legs and the period of the mug determines this depicts a cockfighting combatant rooster. This mug is fitted with an impressive opposing scroll handle with a chased leaf decorated thumbpiece and scrolling lower terminal. This antique mug has a fine color and patination. Cockfighting was legal in England till the Cruelty to Animals Act in 1835, where the sport was conclusively banned. Patination or patina is a subtle coloration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look. Condition The mug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
