Edwardian Solid Silver Matchbox Holder - Henry Matthews, Birmingham 1905. A superb and highly decorative Edwardian solid silver matchbox holder, beautifully crafted in Birmingham in 1905 by the noted silversmith Henry Matthews of Vittoria Street. The holder stands elegantly on four distinctive ball feet and features a finely detailed raised relief of a male golfer in full back swing, making it an especially appealing piece for golfing enthusiasts and collectors of sporting silver. The sides are hollowed out so that you can strike the match on the side of the box. The piece is fully hallmarked on the frame and remains clearly legible, displaying the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, and the date letter "f" corresponding to 1905, along with the maker's mark "HM" for Henry Matthews. This matchbox holder exemplifies the quality and craftsmanship of Henry Matthews. It is an unusual and distinctive example of a functional yet decorative accessory from the period and is accompanied by a vintage matchbox for display. Henry Matthews was a prominent Birmingham silversmith and jeweller, active from around 1894, and is particularly well regarded for his finely crafted small silver items, including vesta cases, snuff boxes, and vinaigrettes.
