Antique Victorian 1878 Sterling Silver Champagne Bottle Pepper

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver novelty pepper Shaker in the form of a champagne bottle; an addition to our silver cruets/condiments collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver pepper has a cylindrical shaped form realistically modelled in the form of a champagne bottle. The lower cylindrical portion of the body is embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved Roman numerals 'XXIX' - 29. The pepper is fitted with the original hallmarked push fit cover modelled in the form of a foil capped champagne cork embellished with pierced 'pepper' holes subdivided by an integrated wire muselet/wirehood indentation design. The underside of this impressive sterling silver pepper bears the retailer's mark 'Jones, London & Paris'. Condition This antique pepper is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent condition. There are some natural fire marks to the surface of the pepper, in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body and part hallmarks to the cover are all very clear.     A fine and impressive, unusual antique Victorian English sterling silver novelty pepper shaker; an addition to our diverse silverware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver novelty pepper has a plain ovoid shaped form. The body of the pepper is embellished with impressive chased decoration depicting a cracked egg shell with a boy’s face and hands to the anterior surface and his feet and buttocks to the reverse. The body has pierced 'pepper' holes in a hexagram formation to the upper portion. This pepper retains the original fully hallmarked screw fit weighted base; which when unscrewed provides access to permit the pot to be filled. This novelty pepper is a fine example of its type.
