Boxed - 19th century - FRUIT KNIFE & FORK - Hallmarked:-Sheffield 1864 Maker JYC

About the Item

This fruit knife and fork are particularly attractive - see the deeply carved, mother of pearl facings, in a diamond pattern. Both pieces have full English hallmarks, applied by the Sheffield Assay Office, and showing that they were made in 1864, The hallmarks:- Crown - Sheffield Assay Office W - Date letter for Sheffield 1864 Lion - Sterling silver guarantee mark Queen`s head - Duty mark showing duty has been paid to the Crown. JYC - John Yeomans Cowlishaw, Market Street, Sheffield. These marks will have been applied by the maker, before the pieces were submitted for assaying. See also, the backs of the handles are lined with an engraved silver band. Both pieces are of the same length:- Open - 4.9 inches. Closed - 2.85 ins. A strip of black

  • Condition:
    Refinished. Repaired: The knife and fork have had a little lubrication on the hinges, but no other work, whatsoever. Their box appears to have been sliding about in a drawer for possibly 150 years. I have polished it and strengthened the hinge, and it is nearly as new. Minor structural damages. A superb Fruit Knife and matching Fork. In perfect unused condition although the original box is a little worn, and has had a minor repair. I have applied a strip of black leatherette to the back of the box, to strengthen the hinge - see picture 8.
