English Sterling Silver Vesta Case, Chester Races, Hallmarked:-Sheffield 1898

About the Item

English sterling silver - VESTA CASE - CHESTER RACES. A full English hallmarks for Sheffield 1898, with the date letter a lower case, Gothic "f" Maker`s mark is W.N, for William Neale & Son, Warstone Lane, Birmingham. This mark is registered with the Sheffield Assay Office. A very rare vesta case. The cast cover shows a scene of three horses and jockeys actually racing past the grandstands at Chester Racecourse. The end cover is also the match strike. In the open position, it locks out quite rigidly, so that a vesta (early match) could be struck, in a downward direction, towards the hinge. A suspension ring is attached, for hanging on a watch chain to keep in a waistcoat pocket. Superb unused condition - no faults Measurements:- 2.13 x 1.14 x 0.56 inches. 54 x 29 x 14.3 millimetres. Weight:- 1.10 ounces / 34.2 grams.
