Georgian Sterling Silver Cake Basket, London 1796, Possibly Thomas Chawner

About the Item

Georgian silver cake basket, London 1796, poss Thomas Chawner. The oval shaped basket with pedestal reed base, border pierced surround, upper section with outer reed design border and pierced guilloche intertwining ribbon. The center plain, crest that of a stag and motto Virtute non verbis - by Virtue, not by words, probably for Robinson, reeded handle, marked with lion passant on underside. Hallmarks through piercing, maker's mark not discernible. Measures: 13.75 x 10 x 11 inches. Weight: 21.5 oz.
