Rare California Modern Clemens Friedell Sterling Silver Martele Caviar Bowl
About the Item
Rare California Modern American Arts & Crafts sterling silver Martele work hand hammered caviar bowl by Clemens Friedell, 1872-1963, Pasadena, California.
A very fine example of Modernist American Arts & Crafts Movement by the famed California Silversmith Clemens Friedell. Metropolitan Museum of Art and Huntington Museum collections include works by Friedell.
Friedell began his silversmithing career at the Gorham Company, perfecting his skill there from 1901 to 1907. In 1911, he opened his own shop in Pasadena, California where his work attracted the attention of wealthy visitors from the east coast as well as local society figures. Early clients included the philanthropist Phoebe Hearst and E.R. Maier, for whom he created a large dining service for eighteen place settings and numerous serving pieces. Friedell exerted strict quality control over the pieces produced in his shop, ensuring the highest quality standard. The business flourished so much that he entertained a brief retirement from 1921 to 1927, buying a ranch in Texas, but returning to Pasadena and the silver business until his death in 1963.
This fine caviar bowl features beautiful Martele work artfully executed to convey a hand wrought technique of the highest order. The exterior hammered design subtly textured at the top gradually turns stronger toward the base, reminiscent of the natural way ice melts, so appropriate for a caviar bowl. The interior has a removable futuristic form vessel with four compartments for ice at the perimeter and a circular central compartment for the caviar container. The vessel includes a later signed Baccarat crystal container and a signed Baccarat crystal spoon.
