Russian Cloisonné Enamel and Silver-Gilt Kovsh

About the Item

Known as a ‘kovsh’ (or kovsch), this item was designed to function as a small drinking vessel. Kovshes have been created in Russia for centuries, often from precious materials, such as silver, gold, gemstones and jewels. Particularly exquisite examples were presented as gifts by the Russian Tsars to their loyal supporters. This kovsh features a bell-shaped body with a single hooked handle. It has been crafted from silver, and its interior has been gilt. The item is finely decorated with cloisonné enamel, taking the form of colourful flowers, foliage and a line of turquoise medallions. The kovsh’s base, rim and edge of its handle are lined with silver rope work bands. The item is marked, indicating that it was crafted in Russia in circa 1910 by the 20th century Artel.
