Sterling Silver Sherry Decanter Label by Charles Rawlings-Eng., 1828

About the Item

Sterling silver decanter label or bottle ticket if you prefer the English style, handmade by silversmith Charles Rawlings in London, 1828 during the George IV period. It is marked C.R in a rectangular cartouche followed by the head of George IV, then by the rampant lion (England’s symbol for the sterling standard), then by the capital letter "D" for the year 1828 and finally the leopard head for the assay office in the city of London, The shape is slightly convex with rounded corners. There are three engraved lines for a border surrounding the word sherry in capital letters. These deeply struck marks are a complete set of English silver hallmarks. I've also included a close-up of the belcher style chain made by the silversmith for these decanter labels. Silver stock was cut into small strips formed into circles and then soldered together to form a chain. Measures: Width 1 9/16" Height 7/8" Total height with chain 4".
