About the Item

A fine pair of George III sterling silver salts, London, 1790, by the celebrated silversmith Henry Chawner — a maker whose refined, restrained neoclassical style made him one of the most sought-after London goldsmiths of the late 18th century. Each salt is raised in a graceful boat-shaped oval form on a spreading oval pedestal foot, the rim finely bordered with applied thread-and-bead decoration. The bowls are engraved with a contemporary armorial crest and retain their original gilt interiors, a hallmark of quality Georgian silverware intended both to display the silversmith's skill and to protect the metal from the corrosive effect of salt. Henry Chawner, who became a Freeman of the Goldsmiths' Company in 1785 and entered his first maker's mark the following year, was renowned for the clarity and precision of his neoclassical designs, working at the height of London's finest Georgian silver production before his retirement from the trade in 1796. This pair exemplifies that quality: crisp hallmarks, confident proportions, and finely worked engraving throughout.
