19th Century Davenport, England Hand-Painted Dessert Service

About

Beautiful hand-painted dessert service from the prestigious Davenport firm of Longport, Staffaordshire, England. The set consists of 5 compotes and 12 plates and features buff and turquoise color ground with lovely hand-painted fruit. Each plate or compote has a unique bouquet of fruit. There are 3 tall compotes with Victorian "dolphin" triparite base design and 2 low compotes with matching base design. Measures: Tall compote 11 1/4" diameter, 7 3/4" high, 2 medium compotes 9 1/4" diameter, 5 1/2" high, 2 low compotes 9 1/4" diameter, 5 1/2" high, Plates 9 1/4" diameter Pattern 1758, Davenport mark for 1870-1876 John Davenport, born in 1765, is said to have begun potting in 1785, first as a workman, and later as a partner with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke. He acquired his own pottery at Longport for the manufacture of earthenware in 1794. By September 1806 the quality of his porcelain wares was such that the Prince of Wales, later to become King George IV, ordered services of the finest kinds. In 1830 he retired, and his two sons Henry and William carried on the firm until 1835, when Henry died. William died in 1869, and his two sons took over the direction of the business, which remained in the family until 1887. In 1887 Davenport was acquired by Burleigh Pottery.
