Elegant Silver Art Deco or Art Nouveau WMF Table Mirror
About the Item
This mirror is perfect for a dressing table, vanity, or mantel with its stylish details- a transition from Art Nouveau into Art Deco.
The design technique is called “repousse” a method of pressing or hammering the decorative embellishment from the back side of the silver frame. It has the mark of WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik) an amazingly prolific manufacturer of silver plate decorative pieces for the home.
Their special “hard silver plating” method which gives extra layers of silver to parts that would ordinarily become worn has given these objects over 100 years old an enduring beauty.
The teardrop shaped mirror has a beveled edge, the backing made of wood with an easel Stand and the silver is in wonderful condition.
Between 1900 and 1910, German company WMF became famous for its Art Nouveau style and established companies for world wide exports in London, Warsaw and Vienna. Many pieces were sent to Argentina through the exclusive distributors Anezin Hermanos y Cia and it is likely that Harrods Department Store which opened on Florida Street in Buenos Aires in 1912 was one of the major retailers of decorative pieces such as this mirror.
