Foley Porcelain Coffee Service, Black and White Domino Midcentury Modern ca 1960

About the Item

This is a stunning Midcentury Modern coffee service serving four, made by E. Brain, also called Foley, in 1957. The shape of this service was designed by Donald Brindly and the black and white decoration called "Domino" by Hazel Thumpston. The service consists of a coffee pot, four coffee cups and saucers, a milk jug and a sugar bowl. The Foley factory was run by E. Brain and shared the Foley kilns with the famous Wileman factory (later called Shelley), which is why these factories are often confused with each other. E. Brain later took over Coalport. This design is called “Domino” and was designed by Donald Brindley and Hazel Thumpston, two well-known designer of the 1950s who were part of the leading group of designers for the “Festival of Britain”. This festival was launched by the British government in 1951 to uplift the country while it was dealing with the devastating effect of the war. It became like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, creating ground breaking, fresh designs for public buildings, household items and all kind of other items for every-day use that would make a difference in ordinary people’s lives. It would create a new and highly original direction for design for decades to come, and items of this period are now highly desired in the hipster “vintage” movement. This Domino design is a great example of this new style. In stark black and white, the items are cheered up by little spouting fountains. The shapes are smooth and playful. Condition report: The set is in perfect condition without any damage or wear. Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can. Dimensions: (diameters) coffee pot measures 21 cm (8 1/4") from spout to handle and stands 21.5 cm (8.5") high incl. finial, cup 7cm (2 3/4") diameter and stands 6 cm (2 3/8") high, saucer 12.5 cm (5"), milk jug stands 8 cm (3 1/8") high and measures 8 cm (3 1/8") from handle to mouth, sugar bowl 9 cm (3.5") diameter and stands 4.5 cm (1 3/4") high.
