William IVth Mason’s Tea Set 10 Pieces Porcelain Pattern 223, English circa 1830
About the Item
This is an early English porcelain part tea set, made by C. J. Mason (The same factory who produced Mason's Ironstone) during the period of William IVth, circa 1830-1835.
The tea set comprises ten pieces;
one x large lidded sucrier or sugar bowl
one x milk jug
four x tea cups
four x saucers
The body on each piece is vertically fluted or ribbed with a printed pattern which has then been hand enameled. All pieces are footed and the cups have a flared lip with a ring and spur handle. The pattern is a listed Mason's pattern called Vase and Box pattern, having a central octagonal panel surrounded by a floral vine with additional floral sprigs and scrolls in typical bright enamels.
This pattern is illustrated on page 114 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, published by The Mason's collectors club. This pattern was also used on ironstone and earthenware wares.
The sucrier, milk Jug and cups are marked with number 223 in iron red and the saucers are marked to the base: English porcelain within a circular garter.
