Royal Worcester Porcelain Soup Tureen Made in 1851

About the Item

This large Royal Worcester soup tureen and stand is decorated with delicate pink, purple, white, and yellow roses and soft green leaves accented with gold. The finial and handles are made in the shape of branches, adding to the charm of the tureen (see figures #3 and 4). Background of Royal Worcester Royal Worcester is believed to be the oldest remaining English porcelain brand still in existence today. Wares produced in the 1740s are known as Worcester Porcelain. In 1788 the company received a royal warrant as purveyors of porcelain to their Royal Majesties of Great Britain.

      Decorated with an elegant design of delicate blue cornflower sprigs, this soup tureen was made by Arras Porcelain in Arras, France, in the late 18th century. The cornflower sprigs, handles, and border edging are decorated with beautiful deep twilight blue enamel. The makers of Arras Porcelain specialized in porcelain painted in this entrancing blue called "Bleu d'Arras." The color of the porcelain body is creamy white. The combination of the creamy white ground and the blue decoration is splendid. Natural forms like the tree branch handle and the blue cornflower decorations were the height of French fashion in the last quarter of the 18th century. Made at the Arras porcelain factory of the Delemers family circa 1780, the tureen and its stand are marked in underglaze blue.
