About

A terracotta figure of a warrior from Cyprus, dating to the Cypro-Archaic period, circa 750–600 BC. The bearded figure is shown standing, his right arm folded across his chest, preparing to unsheathe a now lost sword, the left brandishing a round shield with central spike. Depicted with large round eyes and wearing a helmet with crest and prominent nose piece. Decorated in red and black. An iconic example of Cypro-archaic art. For a set of similar figure, said to have been found at the village of Ormideia, see 74.51.1655 at the Metropolitan Museum. Height: 4 inches or 5 3/4 inches mounted. Provenance: From the collection of Edwin Henry Lawrence (1819-91), great-nephew of the Regency-period society painter Sir Thomas Lawrence. Subsequently Sotheby's, April 1892, lot 525. Subsequently in the collection of Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt Rivers (14 April 1827 - 4 May 1900).
