Ancient Greek Bronze Figure of Hephaistos, 400 BC

About

An ancient Greek bronze figure of Hephaistos, god of fire, dating to the 5th-3rd century BC. Hephaistos is shown seated, nude apart from a pointed craftsman's cap on his head. He rests with his weight on his left foot, his left arm extended to the front and once holding a pair of tongs; presumably in turn holding a piece of red hot metal, which the god is about to strike with a Hammer in his raised right hand. Though a small-scale work and now missing his attributes, the artist has captured the subject with great sensitivity. The composition is beautifully executed and the piece is pleasing from all angles. Graeco-Roman depictions of Hephaistos, or Vulcan (as he was known to the Romans), are rare. For this pose, compare a Fresco from Pompeii currently housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, no. 9531. Measure: Height: 3 1/4 inches or 5 1/4 inches mounted Provenance: Ex. Elie Borowski, Basel, Switzerland. Subsequently in the collection of Denys Sutton (1917-1991), London, acquired from the above on the 11th October, 1963 and passed by descent. Denys Sutton was an art lover and critic with a keen eye. He was the editor of Apollo magazine for 25 years.
