Neolithic Terracotta Vinca Idol, 4500 BC

About

A large, well preserved Vinca idol, from south eastern Europe, dating to the 5th Millennium BC. Depicting a standing female deity with a pot belly and large rounded buttocks. The arms held out and curving downwards, her triangular head gently tilted back to gaze skywards through her large, crescent-shaped eyes. Wearing a close-fitting garment decorated with deeply incised swirls and geometric patterns, and with remnants of red pigment. The arms perforated for suspension or for the attachment of decorations. A superb, finely decorated prehistoric idol. Height: 5 1/2 inches or 7 3/4 inches on stand Provenance: From the collection of H. Ginczler (1895-1965), acquired prior to the early 1950s and thence by descent.
