Rare Ancient Roman Ostrich Egg Wool Spinning Set, 100 AD

About

In Roman times most women spun wool. This precious vessel, fashioned from an ostrich egg, contains a woman's complete set of spindles. Dating to circa 100 AD, the set comprises of a beautifully fashioned ostrich egg, variously ribbed throughout its surface, a set of two nearly complete bone spindles, two with delicate arrow points, a further bronze spindle with amber whorls, and a fragment of a larger spindle or distaff. A delicately made and personal item from the ancient world. Height: 7 1/2 inches mounted. 4 3/4 inches. Diameter of egg: 5 inches. Provenance: With the art dealer John Moore, 1980s.
