Roman Janus Head, circa 3rd Century AD

About

Small Roman marble janushead depicting two nearly identical cherubinheads on each side. The hair finely sculpted with the faces having a attractive expression. Janus was one of the oldest Roman gods and represented the concept of beginning and end or more concrete as a gateway (door) from life to afterlife, chaos to order. When depicted with two identical heads this type is known as Janus Gemini. This small head is presented on a custom made stand. This item was acquired on the French art market. Previously the property of a Metz collector J.C.
