Unique Anglo Roman Limestone Sarcophagus
A stunning Anglo Roman sarcophagus in limestone, sitting on sledge feet and having curved strigilated side carvings with warrior shield and two crossed arrow symbols at each end. This unique piece was discovered in a Copenhagen garden. Although there are signs of water immersion and a repair to the rear wall of the trough this coffer illustrates several symbolic Roman elements and as such exhibits a rich combination of carvings. The original sledge feet compliment the piece well and add a sense of grandeur. The front of the coffer is embellished with a medallion and sinuous strigilated curves. Strigilated patterns are named after the shape of Roman strigil tools that were used to tone skin. There is also egg and dart engraving around the rim of the trough and spiral Roman- form pilasters, suggestive of strength, at each front corner. At each end can be found full shield and two crossed arrow carvings which symbolise warrior status. Such a form derives from the Egyptian period and was adopted by the Roman civilisation. This unique piece has high historic and decorative value and will sit beautifully in any interior space. This item will be shipped on a strong pallet. Arrangements will be made for delivery method.
