19th Century Tiller & Clowes Marionette Donkey Puppets Circus Fairground

About

A wonderful piece of English Folk Art. A hand carved and painting Tiller & Clowes donkey marionette circa 1880 in age. The piece would of been used in a large travelling show performed by the two family's who joined forces in 1873. Marionette shows were a popular form of entertainment for adults in the 19th century presenting shortened versions of London's latest popular entertainment from melodramas and pantomimes to minstrel shows and music hall. In the 18th and early 19th centuries their theaters were relatively makeshift, but after about 1860 many became quite elaborate, with walls constructed from wooden shutters, seating made from tiered planks of wood, and canvas roofs. This particular example has jointed legs, head and neck with applied leather ears and the remnants of a horse hair tail A elderly repair to the back left leg a simple section of bandage has been applied approx measurements are as follows 70cm in length 65cm in height.
