Large Mexican Round Folk Pottery Platter with Heron Bird Design Tonalá Mestizo

$350

About

A lovely vintage hexagonal Mexican stoneware dish for display or perhaps even for use as a platter. This round platter or wall hanging has six sides which are accented with a glazed flourished design in brown. At the center, a heron bird is hand painted with its wings outstretched. He sits in a blue glazed pond with green and brown ferns surrounding him. This piece of earthenware is interesting as portions of it are glazed, and others are not. The texture is eye catching. The back is unglazed and marked MEX c.o. A looped string for hanging is attached at back. Green felt strips are affixed along the bottom to prevent scratching. We love traditional Mexican pottery. Artists such Dolores Porras have long grabbed our attention and make for beautiful touches to any space. This piece we believe was made in Tonala. The ceramic production in Tonalá is known as the authentic mestizo ceramic and is symbolic of Mexico's identity. Made of burnished clay or scented clay, these artistic objects are created for ordinary and decorative use. The tradition comes from the Tonalteca group, which used clay to produce polished forms. Dimensions: 13.25” diameter 2” tall 4 lbs.
