Vintage Large Tarahumara Terracotta Tesgüino Fermenting Pot

About

A fantastic vintage terracotta fermenting pot of the Tarahumara people, Copper Canyon, Northern Mexico. Deaccessioned from a museum collection, this vessel, called an olla, was used specifically to create the ceremonial, fermented corn drink tesgüino. Crudely strapped in dried hide, likely javelina; showing incredible, much-desired wear from age including one very-long-ago applied repair. Great scale and evocative presence; a wonderful, impressive decorative element of deep, historical, early-American significance.
