Early 20th Century Hand-Carved Wood Tribal Mask from Atoni Tribe Timor

$880

About

This mask originates from the Atoni people of Timor, it has a largely Primitive form. For the Timorese people masks portray both male and female ancestors, worn by warriors to scare off enemies or during ceremonies. Masks in Timor were also placed on the altar during sacrifices and in some parts of the island even put inside huts to protect the house from spirits. This mask was crafted from a single block of hard wood and has a wonderful rugged texture and form. It also has a handle which also suggests that it was used during ceremonies and special occasions. A wonderful, sculptural object certain to invoke conversation. It is mounted on a black iron stand. Measures: Height with stand 32cm; height 27cm x width 16cm x depth 8cm.
