Japanese Wood "Shikami" Mask, Noh Theater, Late 1970s
About the Item
A superb Noh theater mask, hand-carved in sturdy Japanese cypress wood. The character it represents is the "Shikami", a wrathful deity.
Shikami (wry face), the grimacing face of “shishi“, a legendary creature or grimace in old times, is a character categorized as a fierce and evil god in Noh theater plays. The mask represents a ferocious expression of the evil character in the play, with its mouth open and a demonic grimace.
“Shikami” is the derivation of a word, “shikamettsura” (a wry or frowning face) used today. Shishi is a legendary lion-like animal regarded as sacred, and in some cases, a symbol of evil.
This mask is intricately carved to capture the intensity of the character, while the wood presents a patina representing its age and use.
An inscription in red lacquer appears in the inner side of the mask, with the name of the character (shikami), and the date (August 1978).
