30-Star Medallion American Flag with Large Central Haloed Star
This is a rare 30-star medallion American flag, celebrating the addition of Wisconsin to the Union. The flag is printed on linen, and has a spectacularly unique star pattern. A double medallion of dancing stars surrounds a large haloed inner star. The large medallion consists of sixteen stars, the inner medallion consists of nine stars. Four oversized stars can be found in each corner. This flag design is completed by thirteen alternating red and white stripes, which represent the 13 original colonies. With thirty printed stars, this flag commemorates Wisconsin’s admission to the Union. By 1846, the population of the Wisconsin Territory had exceeded 150,000, prompting the territorial legislature to vote to apply for statehood. That December, Wisconsin’s delegates at convention produced a progressive constitution, however it was voted down in an 1847 referendum. A second convention was called, which resulted in a more moderate state constitution and was quickly approved in a March 1848 referendum. Wisconsin was added as the 30th state to the Union on May 29th, 1848. The 30 star flag was official until July 3rd, 1851. However, very few 30 star flags would have been made after September 1850. On September 9, 1850, as part of the Compromise of 1850, California was officially admitted into the United States. Consequently, 30-star flags had a fly span of about 2 years, making them very scarce. Condition: Flag is intact with a few small tears and small holes. The flag is heavily soiled and stained, yet structurally stabile. The flag has been presented in a custom-built frame.
