Abraham Lincoln Bust by Leo Cherne, Signed and Dated 1955

About

Breathtaking crushed stone resin portrait bust sculpture of President Lincoln by Leo Cherne, with incised signature & date "1955 Leo Cherne". Leo Cherne was not an artist first and foremost; he was an economist, attorney, humanitarian, public servant and advisor to nine American presidents. In 1955, he created a bust of President Abraham Lincoln based on a photograph taken in 1865, just hours after the White House learned of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender and only four days before Lincoln was assassinated. (Lore has it that Lincoln was reciting the assassination lines from “Macbeth” while he sat for the photo). This bust of Abraham Lincoln is one of the most famous sculptures in the world, the original of this sculpture has been in the White House during every presidency since Dwight Eisenhower. This handsome bust is finished in a dark bronze patina, and mounted on a square base of black wood.
