Model Canoe by Native North American Indians, circa 1900

About the Item

fine quality circa 1900 carved and hand painted canoe, indigenous to the Pacific Northwest Indians and attributed to the Nootka (Nuu Chah Nulth) or Makah tribe, who were known for this type of design, with the flat stern top and "canine like" style bow. The wood is either cedar or aspen which grows readily on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia, where these Indian tribes were known to inhabit. The red and yellow design is nicely applied to both sides of the bow and stern, and the interior base is painted in red to two sections. The wood and paint has aged to a wonderful patina, highlighting the excellent proportions of the canoe to a lifelike full Size example. It is well crafted and is in excellent all original condition. Canoes such as these were made around the turn of the century to appeal and sell to travelers and tourists who visited the area; along with colorful TOTEM poles, bowls, and masks. Sought after by collectors of Folk Art, nautical, canoes, and Native American Indian collectors; this is a quintessential cross over collectible. Dimensions: 14" long x 3 3/8" wide x 2 7/8" high This particular example is from my own personal collection. .

  • Indian Chief Motif Porcelain Humidor, American, circa 1900
    Located in Incline Village, NV
Fine quality hand painted porcelain humidor is in excellent all original condition with no chips, repairs, or overpaint; nice bright crisp paint and detail. No mark, but definitely American, circa 1900 era. Note the detail to the Indian's face and his elaborate headdress. Native American Indians were especially attracted to tobacco and related products and relished the opportunity to pose for pictures on that topic; note cigar store "Indians", match safes, and humidors. This is a very desirable and item of tobacciana with the Indian subject matter and the attractive multicolored hand painted Indian chief with headdress, probably of note but I have not been able to accurately identify him; quite possibly "Big Bow" an Indian warrior who has been identified on other similar objects. • Circa 1900 Salish Totem
    Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
This old model Salish pole dates to around 1900 and was sold out of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. in Seattle, WA. The pole depicts an inverted killer whale, although the identities of the other figures are unclear. There is a formline human face in profile carved in relief and painted on the front of the base. A rather unusual feature of this pole is the inlaid glass beads in the eyes of the figures and blowhole of the whale. Early model poles sometimes incorporated new, non-traditional materials into their work. A highly unusual and early pole. Northwest Coast cedar totem with original Hudson Bay sticker. Patinated with cabin smoke. 15" PERIOD: Circa 1900 ORIGIN: Northwest Coast SIZE: 15" Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West.
