Native American Fine Plains beaded boot moccasins
About the Item
Fine Pair of Plains Woman's Boot Moccasins
North America 19th to early 20th century
A beautifully crafted and well-preserved pair of Plains Native American woman's high-top moccasins, made from soft buckskin and richly decorated with vibrant floral beadwork in coloured glass beads. The uppers are tinted with yellow ochre pigment, a traditional aesthetic choice, and the moccasins are finely detailed with beaded edging and secured with brass button fastenings—a clear indication of both cultural style and practical craftsmanship.
Materials: Buckskin, natural pigment, glass beads, brass
Dimensions: 22.5 cm (length) × 28 cm (height)
Condition: good, signs of age; minor beadwork and fastener loss but remain intact and vivid
These high moccasins would have been worn for ceremonial or formal occasions and reflect the artistry and symbolism of Plains women's dress. The floral motifs suggest possible influence from Sioux, Cree, or Métis traditions, where botanical designs carried both aesthetic and cultural significance.
