Early 19th Century Naive French Votive Ship

About

Early 19th century French Votive model ship. Naïve in construction and decoration. The hull carved from a single solid piece of French oak. The figurehead on the prow is a separate piece, depicts a large growling cat with remnant paint. The detail of the canons and gunports is brass, as is the trim of the ship. The scratch carved windows and deckstep are charming. There is evidence of drying cracks to the rear of the hull these are however secure. Votive ships or Church ships are displayed (often hung) in Churches, made generally by seaman and sailors after escaping a shipwreck or perilous nautical situation.
