19th Century Eastern European Antique Folk Art Painted Chest

A mid-19th century, Eastern European Folk Art painted chest. This Baltic pine coffer was likely decorated as a wedding chest and used to transport a bride’s precious linens, collected since girlhood, to her husband’s home. The underside of the lid is embellished with the serpentine Slavic symbols for Woda (water) which is closely associated with the growth of crops and essential for all life. When closed, this design would lay just above the bedsheets and blankets, intended to bestow its blessing of fertility upon the newlyweds. This chest likely originated in the Bessarabian region of Ukraine or Romania, circa 1860s-1870s.
